CALL TO ACTION
My word of the year is ‘transformation.’

As we wrap up 2021 and look ahead to 2022, the word that is top of mind for me is transformation. Transformation involves disrupting and dismantling longstanding educational structures, policies, and systems that have perpetuated inequity and created barriers to success for too many students. We must support leaders at every level — who are experiencing some of the most stressful years of their careers — to make change possible and sustainable. It is beyond time to break out of outmoded educational structures and traditions that have not led to substantive results, beyond time to change systems that were never designed to serve all children to their fullest potential. Now is a unique window for change because recent disruptions to our usual way of working,

Denise Glyn Borders served as Learning Forward President and CEO from 2019 to 2022. Before that, she was president of SRI Education, a division at SRI International, where she led three centers – Learning and Development, Technology and Learning, and Education Policy. Previously, Borders was senior vice president and director of the U.S. Education and Workforce Development Group at FHI 360, a global human development organization with an evidence-based research approach.
