Curriculum leaders are learners, too

District and central office leaders occupy a unique space in implementing new initiatives. School staff, who trust us to make strong decisions and provide guidance, often expect us to be all-knowing about the new work. But we are also learners, because the reality is that any major change involves a learning curve for everyone involved. This is true of recent shifts many districts are making to curriculum-based professional learning. As districts vet and select high-quality instructional materials and align professional learning to them, curriculum directors, professional development directors, associate superintendents, and others draw on their existing expertise while also building new knowledge and bolstering their leadership.
