Learning Forward recently released our latest book, Mentoring New Teachers: A Framework for Growth by Leslie Hirsh Ceballos, Sharron Helmke, and Thomas Manning. A hands-on guide to creating a high-quality mentoring program, the book will help readers support new teachers’ practice, promote veteran teachers’ growth, and address students’ needs. Written for all educators involved in planning, implementing, and supervising mentoring for new teachers, this book can be used by individuals or as part of a schoolwide mentoring program.
The book delivers practical tools and research-backed strategies that improve teaching and learning in ways traditional “buddy system” approaches for new teachers do not. It includes step-by-step guidance for applying Learning Forward’s mentor cycle, a process for diagnosing needs, providing coaching supports, and monitoring progress, and specific strategies for building mentors’ skills and competencies. Readers get access to both print and online tools for navigating each step of the mentoring process, including partnership agreements, goal-setting frameworks, and observation protocols.
The book builds on research showing that longer and more consistent mentoring programs result in higher levels of teacher satisfaction and retention, more effective instructional practices, and greater student achievement. It also draws on Learning Forward’s extensive experience designing and facilitating Mentor Academies with education systems around the world.
