An AI skills framework to measure and improve educators’ tech use

Artificial intelligence (AI) isn’t simply a new classroom tool — it is a transformative force that requires intentional planning, structured professional learning, and ongoing assessment of how educators are learning and integrating these technologies into their practice. Soon after generative AI tools became widely available, Township High School District 211 in Palatine, Illinois recognized that integrating AI across all levels of our organization was critical. Our goal was to create a robust framework that would not only build AI literacy but also track measurable growth while educators, administrators, counselors, librarians, and support staff moved from initial awareness to full integration of AI into their daily work. Christina Ordonez is the Technology and Media Department Chair at Hoffman Estates High School in Township High School District 211, where she has led professional learning initiatives since 2002. She has authored multiple publications, presented nationally, and designed districtwide professional development aligned with instructional frameworks and equity goals, recently training over 1500 educators on effective, efficient, and ethical AI use. A former English and reading teacher, Christina holds advanced degrees in Curriculum and Instruction, Reading, and Educational Leadership, and is committed to building sustainable systems that support educator growth and success for all students.
