Federal funding update

On January 19, 2026, the U.S. House of Representatives passed, on a vote of 217 to 214, a five-bill appropriations minibus package containing final FY26 funding for the departments of Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, State, and Defense. It did not include final FY26 funding for the Department of Homeland Security as a result of Senate Democrats forcing the Senate to remove this bill from the package over ICE’s controversial activities in Minneapolis and to enter into separate negotiations for that funding.

The final, approved minibus contained no changes to the education spending agreed to previously, leaving in place funding for K-12 programs that is largely level with the previous year, including Title II-A ($2.19B) and Title IV-A ($1.38B).

The FY27 appropriations process is expected to kick-off with President Trump’s presentation of his budget in the late winter or early spring.
