Making a difference with students drives her professional learning

Learning Forward board of trustees member Denise Swee’alt Augustine has been an educator for over 25 years in British Columbia, Canada. Augustine is a First Nations woman who lives in the Cowichan Valley on Vancouver Island, on the unceded lands of the Hul’q’umi’num people. She recently completed a secondment with the British Columbia Ministry of Education and Child Care, serving as the superintendent of Indigenous education. How would you like to introduce yourself to our readers? I identify as the mom of two grown women, as a grandmother, and as an elementary teacher. Denise Augustine is currently seconded to the Ministry of Education where she is leading professional learning for ministry staff and supporting school districts in addressing systemic barriers so that schools can better serve Indigenous learners. The challenges imposed through the response to COVID has made it even more important for educators to work together and listen deeply to the learners and families they serve.
