DALLAS–Jan. 6, 2010– Ingrid Carney, CEO of Carney for Kids Educational Consulting in Chicago, began her term as president of the National Staff Development Council (NSDC) at the conclusion of the Council’s annual conference in St. Louis, Mo., on December 9, 2009.
Carney succeeds Charles Mason, former superintendent of Mountain Brook Schools in Mountain Brook, Ala. Mason, who joined the NSDC Board in 2004, will serve one more year as past president.
Carney joined the NSDC Board of Trustees in 2007 to fill an unexpired term and served as a trustee for two years before becoming president-elect. With 38 years experience in urban school reform, Carney’s career includes serving as deputy superintendent for Boston Public Schools, senior executive director of Chicago Leadership Academies for School Success (CLASS), founding executive director of LAUNCH, the aspiring principals academy for Chicago Public Schools, as well as teacher, principal, and administrator for Chicago Public Schools. Carney also served as Assistant Superintendent for Human Resource Development for Anderson Community Schools, in Anderson, Ind. Carney is a Broad Fellow of the 2007 Broad Superintendents Academy and former president of the Illinois Staff Development Council.
Mark Diaz of Austin, Texas, is NSDC’s new president-elect. Diaz is superintendent and director of Cedars International Academy in Austin, Texas. In 2007, he served as chair of the NSDC Annual Conference in Dallas.
Leaving the board this year are Jim Roussin of Coon Rapids, Minn., and Karen Dyer of Greensboro, N.C. Dyer also served a term as president in 2008. Newly elected board members Amanda Rivera and Kenneth Salim begin three-year terms to fill the seats created by the departure of Roussin and Dyer.
Rivera works for the Chicago Public Schools and currently holds the position of interim principal of the Cesar E. Chavez Multicultural Academic Center. Salim is Director of New Teacher Development in the Office of Professional Development for Boston Public Schools.
