Learning Forward Affiliates are local branches of Learning Forward with deep local expertise and a commitment to equity and excellence in professional learning. State and provincial affiliates build capacity to design, facilitate, and assess professional learning that aligns to the Standards for Professional Learning to improve educator and student outcomes.
One of the ways affiliates connect with their members and stay on the cutting edge of the field is by holding online convenings and conversations. Several groups use articles from The Learning Professional to focus and further their learning.
For example, in October 2024 members and friends of Learning Forward Connecticut read “Lessons in navigating conflict from Northern Ireland” by Emily Byers-Ferrian and Shannon Keeny from the June 2024 issue. As a part of their Link and Learn series, members discussed the article and examined ways it connects to their work.
In January 2025, Learning Forward New Jersey’s leaders brought together members and guest educators as a part of their virtual Chat and Chew series on AI implications in the classroom. They centered their conversation on the August 2024 article “AI is here. Let’s learn to use it wisely,” an interview with author and speaker A.J. Juliani. The nearly 40 educators present appreciated a surprise appearance by Juliani himself before diving into an interactive presentation and lively discussion.
Learning Forward Virginia also hosts quarterly Lunch & Learn events. Recently, the group had a powerful discussion centered around Jennifer Reichel’s article “Are you listening to midcareer teachers’ needs?” from the December 2023 issue. This conversation inspired the Hampton City Schools induction team to take action to support midcareer teachers with a teacher leadership conference, tailored to teachers in their sixth year and beyond.
Kim Richardson, director of induction and development for Hampton City Schools and its cultural competency lead said, “Thank you Learning Forward for The Learning Professional magazine that provides us practical information on professional learning topics and strategies we can use!”
