Apply adult learning principles in your work

Some core aspects of learning apply to people of all ages, but others are especially relevant to adults due to their experience with the world, developmental needs and competencies, and responsibilities. Andragogy is the method and practice of teaching adult learners. Veteran teachers who become school and district leaders typically have more experience and knowledge of the learning needs of children and adolescents than those of adults. By deepening your understanding of andragogy you can become a better leader or professional learning facilitator, just as you likely improved your teaching through your understanding of pedagogy. Incorporating the six principles of adult learning outlined by Malcolm Knowles (1980) can help you ensure the strategies you use with educators are appropriate and helpful.
