When coaching meets leadership, learning cultures grow

Leaders’ roles are multifaceted, in part because the needs of teachers and other educators are multifaceted. Whether it is principals leading teachers, central office staff leading their direct reports, or teacher leaders and instructional coaches leading other teachers, strong leaders set a vision and take responsibility for efforts to achieve that vision. At the same time, they guide and support teachers and other team members to grow professionally and improve outcomes for students. Yet we regularly hear from educators who draw a hard line between coach and leader, arguing that the two are incompatible, even mutually exclusive. In our experience, coaching and leadership are highly interdependent and can be woven together for maximum impact on the school community. This blended role helps schools function as
