NEW YORK CITY– Education publisher and professional learning organization Learning Forward announced its newest issue of The Learning Professional magazine is a recommended resource for professionals attending a national education conference focused on the science of learning.

Taking place on May 2, researchED New York City has planned a full day of sessions for researchers, authors, policy makers and practitioners gathering to learn about the science of learning. Copies of The Learning Professional’s latest issue, “Applying the science of learning,” will be available to conference attendees. Margaret (Meg) Lee and Jim Heal, who are well-known for their work in infusing the science of learning into K-12 schools and systems in practical, applicable ways, were guest editors of The Learning Professional and helped connect it to researchED.

“researchED is a forum for research and insights by authors and practitioners who are meaningfully contributing to the learning science field, helping teachers and leaders build their knowledge and skills in order to make the most of educators’ and students’ learning opportunities,” said Suzanne Bouffard, The Learning Professional editor-in-chief. “We are honored The Learning Professional will contribute to the great discussions and idea sharing happening within the researchED community.”

According to Lee and Heal, “We are excited by the growing enthusiasm for learning science in the United States because it creates the momentum to move beyond isolated strategies and toward a more coherent understanding of how learning happens. When educators, leaders, and systems engage with this work thoughtfully, learning science can strengthen professional judgment, sharpen instructional design, and support more equitable outcomes for students.” Lee and Heal are co-founders of Learning Science Partners. Lee is the United States ambassador for researchED.

The Learning Professional highlights what applying the science of learning can look like from different roles in education. District and school leaders, teacher leaders, and researchers contributed articles offering practical strategies for embedding science of learning principles into learning designs, closing the research-practice gap, and scaling and sustaining promising improvement programs. Many authors of articles in the issue, including Lee and Heal, are researchED speakers.

The Learning Professional (formerly JSD) is published six times a year for Learning Forward members. Articles reflect the organization’s founding principle that building the knowledge and skills of educators through high-quality professional learning is the most critical lever in improving schools.
