Denise Glyn Borders, President and CEO of Learning Forward, issued the following statement about the school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, on May 24, 2022:
“Yesterday’s horrific shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, is a devastating tragedy. Our hearts mourn with the families and community members who lost loved ones. To see children and teachers lose their lives in schools is beyond comprehension.
“Schools are meant to be safe havens for learning, for growth, and for joy. Our nation’s families send their children to school each day expecting that they will be nurtured and safe. Educators go to work with the expectation that they, too, will be safe and supported to fulfill their passion of teaching each student in their care.
“We fail as a nation when we can’t arrive at solutions that prioritize the safety of students and educators. There are too many mass shootings to list, and certainly too many heartbreaking examples in schools.
“Learning Forward urgently calls on policymakers to put children and communities first and finally commit to actions that reduce gun violence in schools.”
