Becoming a Board Member

The Learning Forward Board of Trustees annually seeks candidates for open positions on the board.

Qualified candidates must agree to adhere to and comply with board responsibilities, and agree to perform at the high level of performance as set out by the board.

If you are interested in becoming a member of the Board of Trustees or know of someone that you would like to nominate for this position, please review the Board Responsibilities, the board’s Oath of Office, and the board’s Meeting Norms to clarify the commitment required of a candidate.

Mandatory qualifications for candidates as established in the association bylaws and board policies are:

  • Candidates must be members in good standing of the association;
  • Candidates must not have served on the board during the immediate past two years;
  • Candidates must submit an application for candidacy to the nominating committee;
  • Candidates must agree to serve a minimum term of three (3) years; and,
  • When statistical data demand (a simple majority of board members), candidates may be required to be employed in a PreK-16 school.

If you meet the mandatory requirements to become a candidate, please fill out and send a Candidate Application along with a high resolution photo (headshot) in .tiff or .jpeg format that is suitable for publication to: Joel Reynolds, Board Secretary at no later than September 15.

All candidate applications will be submitted to the Nominating Committee for review. In accordance with the Learning Forward bylaws and board policies, the committee will determine eligibility and select a slate of candidates to present to the Board of Trustees for final approval. All applicants will be notified of the finalized slate on or before October 12.

Beginning November 1, the membership will be given notification of the election, information regarding each candidate, and members will have 10 days in which to vote for the candidate(s) of their choice. Voting will end at 5:00 p.m. EDT on November 10. All candidates will be notified of the results of the election, after which the results will be posted to this Learning Forward web site. The two candidates receiving the majority of the votes cast will become board members and begin their terms of office at the end of the annual conference held in Orlando, Florida on December 6, 2017.

If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to Joel Reynolds, secretary for the Board of Trustees, via email to or by phone at 972-421-0900.
