President Trump’s FY19 Budget Decimates Support for Educators

Dallas, Texas – February 13, 2018

Stephanie Hirsh, executive director of Learning Forward, issued the following statement about President Trump’s proposed budget for FY19, released on 2/12/18:

“We are disappointed to see that, once again, President Trump chose to completely eliminate funding for Title IIA of the Every Student Succeeds Act in his proposed FY19 budget. Title IIA funds are essential to educators at every level in schools, providing critical resources to help them improve teaching and learning for students. We believe that our standing as a nation is threatened when our nation’s leaders fail to prioritize support for the professionals striving to serve our students and communities every day.

“This week’s budget proposal is particularly disappointing when contrasted with last week’s bipartisan, two-year budget deal which, we hope, takes us closer to ensuring that essential funds will be available to support educators. Learning Forward and its members and allies are resolved to concentrate our efforts on realizing the vision of the budget deal.

“Educators should have confidence that policymakers have their backs for the long haul. The President’s proposed budget betrays that trust even with more funding available through last week’s budget deal. We hope that Congress will ignore this proposed budget and, as they should, support educators, students, communities, and schools by fully funding Title IIA.”
