Stephanie Hirsh, executive director of Learning Forward, issued the following statement about the Senate budget proposal on 9/6/2017:

“Today the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies voted to reinstate Title II funding in the federal budget at a level of $2.1 billion. This is wonderful news for students and communities across the country.

“Learning Forward appreciates that the Senate recognizes the importance of supporting educators’ continuous professional growth. The reinstatement of Title II funding to this level is absolutely critical to ensuring that all of our nation’s students have access to high-quality teaching. Learning Forward is also grateful for the emphasis on strengthening school leadership in continued Title II funding.

“Thank you to Learning Forward members and stakeholders who made the case that improving student outcomes depends on federal funding for professional learning. We’ve heard from hundreds of members about their use of Title II funds. These dollars support programs and staff essential to excellent teaching and learning, including in schools that serve our nation’s most vulnerable children. Learning Forward is also proud to collaborate with NAESP, NASSP, AFSA, ASCD, and New Leaders in urging policymakers to continue to fund Title II.

“As Congress continues with the budgeting process, we’re thrilled that the Senate is prioritizing support for effective teaching and leadership. Without Title II funds, student achievement gaps will increase and the teacher shortage will become more pronounced.

“We continue to urge stakeholders to contact their members of Congress to stress the vital importance of full funding of the Title II program to achieve excellence and equity in our public schools.”
