Coaching to unlock students’ writing potential

Coach.Teach.Write is an innovative year-long professional learning program aimed at improving teachers’ instruction and, as a result, increasing student engagement and improving writing outcomes. Teacher leaders provide coaching and support to 7th- and 8th-grade English language arts (ELA) teachers to implement evidence-based instructional methods that integrate personal narrative writing. The project has been introduced in districts across the U.S. in response to a need to provide teachers with greater support for writing instruction and find new ways to engage students in the classroom. Coach.Teach.Write is a partnership between the National Writing Project (NWP) and American Institutes for Research (AIR) with funding from the U.S. Department of Education. AIR is conducting an evaluation to examine whether the program improves teachers’ confidence and instructional practices as well
