4 steps for an effective shadowing experience

Shadowing is a powerful, job-embedded, and authentic professional learning design, useful for educators at any point along the career continuum. In many apprenticeships, shadowing is the first step in understanding a role or job. Just as pre-med students shadow doctors to understand what it takes to do their work, educators can shadow one another for the same purpose. For learning professionals changing roles or looking to improve an aspect of their instruction or routines, creative solutions may be as close as the neighboring classroom. A wealth of professional learning can be unlocked by following another educator in real time through their day or during a specific time period.
