Followers of the Learning Forward blog know that we changed our name several years ago from the National Staff Development Council to Learning Forward. Later this year, we'll reach the five-year anniversary of the new name. As Learning Forward Deputy Executive Director Frederick Brown reflects on those years, he thinks about some of the learning he's seen in schools and districts that leads him to ask, "Are you learning forward or backward?" Here are some examples of what Brown feels are backward learning activities.

    Announcing the departure of René Islas

    • René Islas, senior vice president of research, development, and demonstration for Learning Forward, has accepted the opportunity to lead the National Association of Gifted Children as executive director.

    Galveston County teams with Learning Forward to improve professional learning

    • Learning Forward has launched a professional learning initiative that will help Galveston County, Texas, area superintendents and their leadership teams support school leaders, change educator practice, and improve student results.

    New Officers and Board Members Lead Learning Forward

    • Deborah Jackson, special projects administrator in Fairfax County (Va.) Public Schools, began her term as president of Learning Forward at the conclusion of the association's annual conference in Nashville, Tenn., on December 10, 2014.
