Jul 28, 2014
Brennan-Rogers in New Haven, Connecticut, was named a low-performing school in 2010. Principal Karen Lott replaced two-thirds of teachers and imposed a longer school day in an attempt to improve academic performance. The extended schedule was scrapped a year later when it didn't work. Instead of keeping kids in school longer, teachers needed to better utilize the time they already had, Lott decided. She drafted a new schedule that retained the component that seemed most promising: teacher collaboration.
